What is the Spelling Bee about?

The Foreign Language Spelling Bee is a competition for students in Year 7 to build on the work they do with the Routes into Languages National Spelling Bee by practising and improving their vocabulary, spelling and memory skills in a foreign language (French, German or Spanish).
The competition has 4 stages (two school stages, a regional final and a national final), and the competitors must learn 50 words per stage in their chosen language, totalling to 200 words if they reach the national final.
The contestants are tested at the end of each stage with random words being called out in English which they are required to translate into the target language and then spell out each letter individually also in the target language.  They have to translate and spell as many words as possible in a very clear manner in one minute!

What is the Translation Bee about?

The Translation Bee is a competition for students in Year 8 & 9 to build on the work they did in Year 7 with the Routes into Languages National Spelling Bee practising and improving their vocabulary, spelling and memory skills in a foreign language (French, German or Spanish).  It builds on the requirements of the new KS3 and KS4 curriculums, with its emphasis on translation and grammatical manipulation, helping students to practise and improve a range of skills vital to preparation for starting a GCSE course: vocabulary, pronunciation, memory, verb conjugation, tenses and sentence formation.  The competition has four stages (two school stages, a regional final and a national final) and consists of translating as many sentences as possible from English into the chosen Foreign Language in one minute.
