PSHCE and Citizenship

Personal, Social, Health and Careers Education

PSHE at Spalding High School brings together Personal, Social and Health Education, as well as many parts of the Citizenship curriculum. As a curriculum area it is designed to help give pupils the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to lead confident, safe, healthy, independent lives and become informed, active, responsible citizens. In Years 7-11 it is taught, alongside the Careers curriculum, fortnightly in ‘PSHCE’ lessons. In Years 12-13, the ‘Personal Development’ Curriculum is taught fortnightly, with separate Careers lessons. Many aspects of PSHE and Citizenship are reinforced by aspects of other subjects; this is most notable in RS, Biology, Mathematics and History but is also apparent in other parts of the curriculum too.

Through our curricula, every pupil learns to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. In addition, they reflect on their experiences and learn to understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that will prepare them for adulthood.

At Spalding High School we aim to give our pupils opportunities to:

  • Take and share responsibility
  • Feel positive about themselves
  • Make real choices and decisions about their own lifestyle
  • Recognise different types of harm, including Harmful Sexual Behaviour, and how to find information and advice to deal with challenging situations if they arise.
  • Develop good personal relationships, of different types
  • Consider social and moral dilemmas
  • Recognise the diverse world we live in, including the Protected Characteristics
  • Find information and advice
  • Prepare for change in life
  • Develop effective organisational skills

We do this because we believe in the fundamental value of these experiences. Our timetabled PSHCE lessons are usually delivered by the form tutor or a variety of outside agencies are used. The creation of our developmental scheme of work from Years 7-13 is based on progression of understanding and maturity, with many aspects being delivered as part of a ‘spiral’ curriculum based on the recommendations of the PSHE Association.
