The Board of Governors

Governor Profiles

Peter Gorton - Chairman
Until my retirement in August 2007, I was Assistant Headteacher at Spalding Grammar School, having taught there as Head of Chemistry and Head of Science for thirty years.  I am at present Chair of Governors at Spalding High School, having been Vice-chair for a number of years.  I have served as a Governor at Spalding St John’s Church of England Primary School for the last twenty years and have served both as Chair and Vice-Chair.  I am married to Jill who was also a Science teacher, and we have two grown-up children: David is a professional musician, lives at St Neots, and is married with a daughter; and Michael who is a documents controller and lives in West London.  I am a licensed lay minister at St Mary and St Nicolas Parish Church in Spalding.

Anita Toal - Vice-Chair
I have been a governor at the High School for many years, initially as a parent Governor and now as a co-opted Governor.  I also served for 15 years as a Governor of a local Primary School.  I am a Solicitor and the Managing Partner of Maples Solicitors LLP in Spalding where I have worked since 1989 specialising in Family Law and Criminal Litigation.  I am married with 2 children and my daughter attended Spalding High School.  My outside interests include a love of literature and drama and as the children were growing up in my spare time I studied for my second degree, a BA in Humanities with Literature so I have a keen interest in the work of our English and Drama departments.

The Board of Governors

All maintained state schools are required to have a governing body. At Spalding High School the Board of Governors comprises 13 voting and 5 non-voting members, one of whom is appointed by the Local Authority, some elected by parents or by the staff, and some co-opted from the local community; the Headteacher is also an ex officio member.

The purpose of the Board of Governors is to take responsibility for the strategic development and direct of the School and to be a “critical friend”; when necessary, the governors also appoint a new Head.

Whilst the Board of Governors are not responsible for the day to day running of the School, we are lucky at the High School to have a very committed governing body which takes an active role in the life of the School; the chairman meets with the Head once a week, and governors attend each parents’ evening to canvass the views of parents.
